In July 1937 Arethusa was given permission for 10 days leave which was taken at
Golfe Juan, on the French Riviera, from the 7th to the 17th. Arethusa then returned to Chatham at 4pm
on September 2nd instead of 2.30 on August 27th.
There were 482 men aboard at the time, several crew were mentioned, namely:-
- A Jones P.O. Cook
- Nichols, Wireless Operator
- Baker, who apparently was good at ironing
- P.O. Nelson
These were among the 21 men who shared the 3rd messroom, also mentioned were a
J Gilder and finally but not least a certain Capt Vian, who some of you may
know became Rear-Admiral Sir Philip Vian who would later command Operation Vigorous in June 1942. Ultimately he would command the Eastern
Task Force of the amphibious assault on Western Europe on D Day, of which Arethusa would play her part.
