Photographs from the collection of Leading Seaman - Lawrance
LS Lawrance served aboard Arethusa from 1935 to 1937, he was career navy serving from 1926-52. He then went on to train the M(Malayan)RNVR in Singapore. I think you will agree that he was quite an accomplished photographer!
What an amazing feat to capture the torpedo in flight? Taken during Arethusa's working up exercises for her first commission in 1935, off Portland harbour. Portland was used extensively for torpedo training.
It seems the torpedoes were recycled, a nice shot showing the ship's boat.
A salvo from the 6 inch main guns.
Visit of the First Sea Lord (Sir S Hoare) from Queen Elizabeth, QE fires a salute while he transfers to Arethusa.
Capt Tennant greets the Sea Lord on the quarterdeck of Arethusa.
A nice shot showing some of Arethusa's deck equipment.
