Able Seaman - Cyril Alexander Francis Moore
Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Moore, of Bromley, Kent. He was 20 years of age when he was killed in action aboard HMS Arethusa. Cyril's brother Ken, said that when he lost Cyril it was like loosing a best friend. When their father died in 1957, they went to the hospital to pick up his clothes and in the pocket of his dads suit they found the telegram informing them of Cyril's death - he'd carried it with him all those years. Cyril joined the navy at 17, he'd always wanted to make a career out of it, his ambition was to become a Petty Officer. He played the piano and used to play in the mess to entertain the men. He also loved to draw and some of his cartoon drawings were hung in the mess. Cyril was always very calm and he wasn't even fazed by the bombings going on around him. Ken also recalls particularly how Cyril was a very loving and kind son to his parents. The last time Cyril came home on leave Ken and his parents and brother Ron went to the station to see him off. They had seen him off on a number of occasions but on this day Cyril's father had a bad feeling and unusually for him, had a tear in his eye when he said goodbye to Cyril and told him to be careful. Ken's daughter Polly wishes she had known Cyril, he'd never had the chance to have his own family, but he will never be forgotten by his brother's. |
